Tyrrell’s Semillon Vat 1 2019
$ 43.61
DescriptionEdward Tyrrell planted his first vines in the Hunter Valley in 1858 establishing Tyrrell’s Wines. His first vintage was in 1864 and by the turn of the century the land had became recognized as some of the Hunter Valley’s finest vineyard land. The Hunter Valley was ideal for the production of premium wines, notably Shiraz in the reds and Semillon in the whites. These two varieties provided the basis for the beginning of the Tyrrell’s premium Winemaker’s Selection Range. From being a very traditional Hunter Valley winery, Tyrrell’s have expanded their portfolio to include some excellent new wines from Victoria and McLaren Vale, under their Rufus Stone label.Vat 1 Semillon is fermented in stainless steel, spending a short time on lees in tank prior to bottling. It sees no oak.As of this tasting at the end of 2025, the 2019 Vat 1 Semillon is nearly seven years from its harvest. The wine is yet to fully develop the characteristic and desirable toastiness that is endemic to great, older Hunter Valley Semillon, and yet there are whiffs of it. And it is good. There are notes of creamed honey on toast, pressed linen, lemon pith, ocean spray, crushed shells and wheat. In the mouth, the wine is featherlight, intense and long through the finish. This is very good indeed. 10.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Wine Advocate 96
